'm considering creating a program on persuasion and influence. The best place to start is you, my loyal, always faithful, always supportive, wonderful subscriber!
Seriously, your feedback is useful and important. Are you interested in learning how to persuade and influence people? If so, what area of your life; professional, dating, relationships, etc., would you like to be more persuasive and influential? And what obstacles, resistance, problems, etc. do you encounter when trying to persuade and influence people?
I can't possibly teach everything there is to know about persuasion and influence here because first of all I don't know everything there is to know. No one does. This is an area of study that is always evolving.
And also everything I have learned would not fit here.
However, I can teach you a key understanding that will help you become more persuasive and influential.
That key understanding is knowing why people don't take action and why people do take action. Or rather what happens in someone's brain when they're persuaded to do something?
Think about the last time you made a conscious decision or choice. I say conscious because we're on autopilot most of the time and most of our choices are made unconsciously.
Why did you make that conscious choice?
It can be as simple as why you bought the red sweater instead of the white one. Why did you you choose fries instead of steamed veggies as your side order for your entree at a restaurant?
To many this seems random. To you though, the informed NLPer, you know there's much more going on here.
Most people value comfort perhaps a little too much. They value what is familiar. Unfortunately this can lead to inactivity, lack of fulfilling your potential, and is extremely frustrating for sales people trying to persuade someone to part with their money.
Yep, comfort. Comfort can be a dangerous thing, but I'll address the dangers of it more in depth in a later blog.
For now let's look at comfort as a value. There's nothing wrong with valuing comfort. We all do to some degree.
Knowing this about people can be an incredible advantage when it comes to persuading them.
If someone values comfort highly that means they will do almost anything to avoid discomfort and will rarely make decisions they feel might lead them to discomfort.
Paying large sums of money is uncomfortable. Exercise is uncomfortable. Negotiating a deal can be uncomfortable.
If people value comfort so much, how does anything ever get done?
Comfort is just a matter of perception. It depends on how it is framed.
If by going through the discomfort of paying a large sum of money I might arrive at a greater level of comfort (or some other value I value more than comfort) it will be worth it to me to buy the more expensive car with the leather seats.
If by going through the discomfort of exercising I feel better mentally and physically about myself, I'll exercise three to five times a week no problem.
If by going through the uncomfortableness of negotiating a deal... Ah you get the point.
When you can demonstrate to someone that it's worth it for them to move out of their comfort zone, out of the familiar and into the uncomfortable unfamiliar, that they will reach a higher level of comfort or they will fulfill a higher value than comfort, they will take action.
That's persuasion!
Remember! Your feedback is important. What areas in your life do you want to be better at persuading and influencing and what challenges do you come up against?

I created NLP Gym to help others learn NLP quickly and as effectively as possible, which is to treat it the same way you would if you were building strength in a gym.
My mission is to make NLP accessible to as many people as possible especially those who desire to learn it. My vision is of a world where NLP is as commonly practiced as yoga or martial arts because our bodies are not the only parts of us that need exercise and nourishing.
Stick around. It's going to keep getting better!
