Personal Development Revolution β Dr. Matt

You may be wondering what all of the fuss is about. Why do I keep going on and on about Dr. Matt?
Here is the story.
Once upon a time… about four months ago in San Diego at a hypnosis training, the class broke to pair up with partners for an exercise on the very first day of the course. I saw a bearded man who looked about my age, maybe a few years younger who didn’t have a partner so we sat across from each other and began.
He had an accent but spoke great English. Within a few moments we found ourselves realizing we had a lot in common and we nearly forgot about the exercise and just talked.
His clarity of thought and the way he could articulate his ideas both challenged me and stimulated new ideas and new understandings in my mind. These are the kind of conversations I live for and I wanted more.
“Who are you and what do you do?” I finally said.
“I’m a trainer, coach, and author in Europe.”
When I attend a NLP or hypnosis training I’m used to being one of the most highly skilled in the room aside from the teacher. Sometimes people even recognize me from my Youtube channel. At the very least I stand out.
But 15 minutes after meeting Mateusz Grzesiak, a.k.a. Dr. Matt, I felt like I was about to get schooled. At that moment I had no idea how exactly true that would be.
“I’m a NLP teacher,” I said.
After comparing notes on NLP and hypnosis and NLP trainings and teachers we had trained with his resume humbled me. I was outgunned. Instead of wanting to compete with him though, I suddenly found myself wanting to learn from him.
“NLP though is not really what I do,” he said.
Now I was confused and he could see this in my furrowed brow. He smiled.
“I’ve created something called Interdisciplinary Psychology.” He said. “I also call it Mixed Mental Arts.”
I didn’t want to take up all of Dr. Matt’s free time but at every break and at lunch time all I wanted to do was
find out more about the technology he had created. When I’m curious and when I want something I can be a bit obsessive.
He didn’t seem at all put off by my machine gun style of questioning.
I found out that in addition to years of personal development training in several different models, he also had lived in various countries and had integrated all of the best parts of several cultures; leaving behind the not so good parts, to create what he calls Mixed Mental Arts.
It turned out NLP was just one of many disciplines he had mastered sort of like mastering Brazilian Jujitsu as a component of Mixed Martial Arts.
In other words, I had found the Bruce Lee of personal development.
Part of me felt sick because Dr. Matt had already accomplished what I had been after for years (and he’s a couple of years younger than me, which I still haven’t forgiven him for). And the other part of me was thrilled to meet such a rare and fascinating talent.
Our conversations weren’t all shop talk though. Dr. Matt is quite warm and friendly and has a great sense of humor. Within days we were sharing laughs like old pals. Several people at the training asked if we had known each other prior to the training as if we had been friends for years. Sometimes we just went with it.
“Yeah we go way back,” I would say to the inquisitor. Then I would turn and look at Dr. Matt and say, “It’s been, what… at least three days?”
We could walk into a room and within moments of observing people he could give you the breakdown of the social dynamics. He could even sometimes accurately predict peoples’ behavior. It was like he would recognize an algorithm in what otherwise seemed like unpredictable human interaction.
At times he seemed psychic. He would comment on something I was thinking about even though I hadn’t said a word about it. He would chuckle at my astonishment and then proceed to breakdown exactly how he knew it.
Another thing I noticed about him is he speaks not to the persona you portray but to your potential. I saw him do this with others and I experience this still when we communicate. It’s as if he can see your perceived limitations and he can see beyond them. I had never encountered this in a teacher or coach or anyone before.
Of course I wanted to know how he was doing all this. When I questioned him about it he would just say, “I can teach you if you want.”
Yeah I want I would say but that’s where the conversation would end.
I don’t believe in a free service; that doesn’t mean that money has to be the cost everything though. I also believe in reciprocity.
Dr. Matt just like anyone would want something in exchange for coaching and mentoring me and I was willing to pay whatever price to learn from him.
Finally after stopping off at a coffee shop after having lunch he looked over at me and said “Do you really want to learn this?”
I had already been thinking about how to get Dr. Matt to the U.S. to share his technology with people here. I’m not one of those types who likes to hoard knowledge or hold onto so called “secret” techniques. When I find something great, I like to share it with everyone.
One of the last days of the training in San Diego, Dr. Matt and I went to dinner, a nearby b.b.q. restaurant that Dr. Matt seemed to not get enough of. I suppose where he lives in Europe they don’t get much b.b.q. so he was taking advantage of it while he could.
As we ate he picked my brain about what Americans might want to learn from him.
“Put it this way,” I said, “I’ve been around the personal development scene for years and I haven’t seen anything like what you do. Once people see how powerful it is, they will want it. The difficult part is getting it in front of them.”
The U.S. and especially California is way into personal development. We pretty much invented it. When you travel to other countries you start to realize that it’s just not as common as it is in California, which means the competition is super steep here.
In other words there’s no shortage of self-help gurus. Standing out from the crowd as a legitimate personal development teacher is difficult.
“Are you up for the challenge?” I said to him.
“Do you want to collaborate?” He said.
“Hell yeah!”
That’s when a new journey for me began and for Dr. Matt, a journey that has led us here. That’s right. It has led to this event, these 3 talks Dr. Matt will be giving November 4th in Santa Cruz at Hotel Paradox.
We’re not charging much because we’re primarily interested in just getting the word out for now. If everything goes as planned (and it likely will) we will be producing bigger events for a much higher price in the near future.
Right now is a unique opportunity to get in on Dr. Matt’s first appearance as a teacher and trainer in the U.S.
