I'm amazed at how much political fiction sold as political fact crosses the internet highways of social media as we draw closer to presidential elections. People see information in their Facebook or Twitter feed and if they agree with it they share it without ever taking a few seconds to verify whether or not it's true. Opinions are different. We can share our opinions or someone else's opinions on social media without trying to pass them off as facts. However, how many of your opinions are based on false assumptions or are unchecked, so called facts? How different might your opinions, your beliefs, and your thinking in general be if you questioned your assumptions even the assumptions you believe to be based on fact? Essentially, this is what the Meta Model does. The Meta Model presupposes that we have a map of reality and we operate from the map instead of reality. We couldn't possibly absorb all of the information we receive through our senses that reality surrounds us with and make good, meaningful use of it. So we Delete, Distort, and Generalize this information in order to make decisions and hopefully live the best life that we can. The people who accomplish the most, succeed the most, live happy and abundant lives have the best strategies for deleting, distorting, and generalizing information to create their reality. In its essence, NLP is the study and the modeling of these strategies. Though often overlooked, the Meta Model is one of the core foundations (if not the core) of NLP. Language holds clues, called Meta Model Violations, that reveal how someone is deleting, distorting, and generalizing. Meta Model challenges are ways to challenge these violations so that a person can discover new information that could free them from a problem and provide new solutions and options that were covered up by limiting beliefs and false assumptions. A Facebook or Twitter feed is just like our internal maps. Based on patterns or algorithms of what you usually click on, your account will feed you more of these or similar bits of information. The more you expose yourself to this information the more likely you will believe it regardless if it's true. The more you believe something the more your reality will appear to reflect what you believe. Next time you get on Facebook or Twitter, fact check anything you see that is trying to pass as fact and see what you get. If you want to be really annoying (like me), challenge your Friends in the comments when they post something that isn't true just like you might challenge a Meta Model violation. By the way, knowing the Meta Model patterns will improve your debate skills radically. Most of all, check your own assumptions. Meta Model yourself. It could change your life. It changed mine. "P.S. If you haven't already signed up for our Free 30 Day Sensory Acuity Course, parts of the Meta Model are covered in it. Click here!
